Resumo

Nature provides people with ecosystem services that are essential for the maintenance of the human species on the planet, such as provisioning, supporting, regulating, and cultural services. However, the value of Nature must be greater than the exploitation of its natural resources, as the relationship between human society and Nature occurs through its culture, beliefs, symbolism, as well as their history and geography. The objectives of this study were to analyze how people perceive the importance of forests and the ecosystem services they provide in an urban/rural context, as well as to examine whether characteristics such as income, age, gender, formal education, and place of residence influence this perception. To this end, semi-structured interviews were conducted with residents from the urban and rural areas of a micro-basin in Boituva, São Paulo State, Brazil. Some qualitative and spontaneous response questions were analyzed using the metaphor method. The other questions were analyzed by relating the degree of agreement of the respondents with statements made about ecosystem services, and the relationship of this agreement with socioeconomic characteristics, age, and gender. In the first part, the results showed that most respondents perceive the "forest" as something positive and report its existence to cultural ecosystem services (pleasure, leisure, health), with regulating  ecosystem services  being the second most cited. In the second part, it became evident that gender, age, formal education, income, and the place where they lived in childhood influenced the respondents' perception, with women and older individuals being more aware of the majority of ES.
