Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the impacts of the pandemic context on the health and burden of caregivers of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) during the pandemic period. It is a qualitative study conducted with 20 caregivers from Imperatriz, Maranhão, Brazil. The data were analyzed using thematic content analysis. The results revealed that the Covid-19 pandemic caused significant changes in daily routines, including intensified hygiene care and modifications in school and therapeutic activities. Fear of death was reported as an additional concern among caregivers. Regarding the sharing of caregiving responsibilities, there was little to no family support, leaving the burden primarily on mothers, which resulted in both physical and mental health issues. The overload particularly affected mental health, leading to diagnoses of depression and anxiety. Self-care, efforts to maintain their own health, and professional opportunities were largely neglected in favor of caring for their children. The study concludes that there is an urgent need for public policies directed at caregivers and for raising awareness among families and society about the essential support required in the caregiving process.
