Abstract

This research aimed to compare stress among patients who are going to have cholecystectomy surgery, with a control group of patients in clinical treatment of gastritis, and also to delineate the problems confrontation strategies used by those patients. There were 2 groups, 15 surgical patients and 10 clinical patients. The Inventory of Stress Symptoms of Lipp was used to evaluate the stress and, in order to assess coping strategies, the Folkman and Lazarus’s Ways of Coping Questionnaire was applied. It was verified that most of surgical patients had stress (73,3%), while only 10% at clinical patients. There were more patients in the stage of resistance (72,7%) and with physical symptoms (63,3%). There was a significant relation between gender and the diagnosis of stress, showing there was higher occurrence of stress cases among the women in this sample (p<0,05). The main coping strategy in both groups was the factor escape and avoidance. Sugery was described as a stress factor, underlining the need for stress management interventions, aiming to reduce pre-surgery stress and a better recuperation after it.
