Selectionism, metaphors and cultural practices: Would there be a third kind of selection at the cultural level?

Abstract

This paper is a reflection on the idea according to which there is a kind of selection dedicated to cultural
practices. I will argue that this proposal was based upon a metaphorical extension of natural selection to
the cultural dimension. Next, I will present the inconsistencies in Skinner’s works resulting from this
strategy as well as the problems of explanatory models based on analogies and metaphors. Finally, I will
consider an alternative approach to the selection of cultural practices in which the contingency remains
the central unit of analysis, and that does not rely on metaphors and analogies or on a third kind of
selection. Consequences of adopting such approach will be explored.

Diego Zilio, Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (UFES)

Possui graduação em Licenciatura Plena em Psicologia e Formação do Psicólogo, pela Unesp, campus de Bauru. É Mestre em Filosofia da Mente, Epistemologia e Lógica pela Unesp, campus de Marília. É Doutor em Psicologia Experimental pelo Instituto de Psicologia da USP. Atua nas áreas da Psicologia e Filosofia, com ênfase em Análise do Comportamento, Delineamentos Culturais, Filosofia da Mente, Filosofia da Ciência, História da Psicologia, Neurociências e Ciência Cognitiva. Tem artigos publicados em periódicos nacionais e internacionais. Um livro de sua autoria, intitulado A Natureza Comportamental da Mente: Behaviorismo Radical e Filosofia da Mente, foi publicado pela Editora Cultura Acadêmica (Unesp) em 2010. Em 2012, foi pesquisador visitante no Georgia Institute of Technology, em Atlanta, Estados Unidos. Entre 2013 e 2015 foi pesquisador de pós-doutorado filiado ao Programa de Pós-Graduação em Psicologia do Desenvolvimento e Aprendizagem da UNESP, campus de Bauru. É membro do grupo de trabalho (GT) Investigações Conceituais e Aplicadas em Análise do Comportamento, da Associação Nacional de Pesquisa e Pós-graduação em Psicologia (ANPEPP). Atualmente é professor Adjunto do Departamento de Psicologia Social e do Desenvolvimento da Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo e do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Psicologia da mesma universidade.
