Abstract

Students are frequently subjected to: institutional controls; have to learn how to work with several dimensions related to teachers; material conditions; and institutional requirements among other things. Some of the controls are coercitives. Depending how this occurs, some alteration may happen in the condition of their health. The main objective of the present work is to investigate the relationship between work controls and the students’ health. Twenty three psychology students of the sixth semester at the public university in Vale do Itajaí, Santa Catarina, were analyzed through means of a questionnaire. The data collecting tools were based upon an analysis of two aspects considered as an inherent part of the phenomenon: firstly, the general characteristics of the analyzed person, and secondly, the controls applied to their work. Results of analysis showed that, in the students’ perspective, there are situations in the academic environment, such as using evaluation methods in a coercive way, the teachers’ control related to attendance and deadlines, as well as the individual attitudes of other students, make them feel uncomfortable. Further, there are exigencies, especially related to deadlines, attendance and participation in class activities. The data reveals the occurrence of coercive acts in several academic activities and that these seem to be related to changes in the students’ condition of health.

Keywords: Behavior and teacher’s work; coercion in learn; student’s health.
