Abstract

This study aimed at understanding the meanings assigned to the cardiac surgery by patients who had
undergone the surgical process. Thirteen patients submitted to surgery participated in the study and
semi-structured interviews and auto-photography were used for data collection. Data was
qualitatively analyzed, based on content analysis, together with image analysis, evidencing that
meanings attributed to the cardiac surgery concerned the surgical experience as generating suffering,
feelings of depersonalization and abandonment, imminent fear of death and strangeness concerning
the body. We highlight the need for health professionals who are part of the health care team of such
patients to recognize such meanings asigned by them to the surgical procedure.
