Abstract

Childre's novel have been recognized as learning source of behaviors and values which contribute to positive social interactions. This study aimed to functionally analyze the fictional character Emília of Sítio do Picapau Amarelo and to identify social behaviors that can be classified as assertive, aggressive, and passive. Three children's novels of Monteiro Lobato were analyzed according to the character presents no difficultty to express herself in situations with risk of unwanted reaction from others. Additionally, we discuss the multiple control sources over the assertive behavior, namely the short and long term consequences, for the individual and the social group.
