Abstract

This research aimed to understand in which degree aggressiveness is attributed to different age groups. The design of the study was 2 x 4 – the factors being the type of aggressiveness (hostile or instrumental) and the age group (children, adolescentes, adults, and seniors). Data was collected by using a questionnaire elaborated with the EFSurvey software. Results demonstrated that aggressive behavior is perceived in a different way, depending on the age group to which the performer of the aggression belongs. Furthermore, the justifications of the participants to the type of aggression were also differentiated, with the hostile aggression justified by external reasons to the agent, such as upbringing and social environment, and instrumental aggression being justified differently depending on the age of the participant of the research.

Keywords: aggression; social perception; ageism.
