Understanding the mother’s learning in the chore with the son in a pediatric Intensive Care Unit

Abstract

The objective of this qualitative study was to find out how mothers learn about caregiving to sons interned in pediatric intensive care units. It was carried out at a private hospital in the Southeast of Brazil. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews and participant observation. The results showed that the mother learns by observing the health professionals and through activities undertaken by the multiprofessional team. The mother learns to coexist and to share limited spaces; the periods to attend the son; and experiences of others about how to take care. The interaction educates the mother and the multidisciplinary team when they share beliefs ingrained in the daily activities.

Mestre e Doutora em Psicologia da Educação pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo. Atualmente é professora titular e coordenadora do programa de pós-graduação em Psicologia Educacional, nível mestrado no Centro Universitário FIEO -UNIFIEO. Seus principais interesses estão voltados para o estudo dos processos de aprendizagem humana em seu desenvolvimento integral e dificuldades específicas entendendo que nesse processo as variáveis psicológicas encontram-se articuladas a componentes sociais. Suas pesquisas nessa área têm investigado a aprendizagem em diferentes contextos: escola, família, abrigos, FEBEM. O principal enfoque teórico que norteia os seus estudos está na articulação entre a Epistemologia Genética e Psicanálise. Outros autores como Foucalt têm influenciado seus trabalhos. Atualmente tem se dedicado mais ao estudo de temas relacionados à identificação dos aspectos preditivos dos problemas de aprendizagem da lecto escrita.
