BIOGRAFIA E AUTOBIOGRAFIA EM A CIVILIZAÇÃO DO RENASCIMENTO NA ITÁLIA, DE JACOB BURCKHARDT

Resumen

Formado pelas lições dos estudiosos responsáveis pela consolidação da ciência histórica na Universidade de Berlim, no século XIX, o historiador suíço Jacob Burckhardt (1818-1897) é comumente referido como autor do clássico livro, editado em 1860, A civilização do Renascimento na Itália. Por meio dessa obra, Burckhardt apresentava uma síntese histórica do período, traduzida na memorável fórmula da descoberta do homem e do mundo. O presente trabalho persegue o desenvolvimento da descoberta histórica de Burckhardt por duas fundamentais expressões do homem renascentista: a biografia e a autobiografia. A Civilização do Renascimento na Itália é, portanto, observada como construção historiográfica que esteve permeada pelos temas das narrativas biográficas e autobiográficas, observadas como símbolos de um grandioso constructo histórico: a individualidade moderna.

Biography and autobiography in The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy by Jacob Burckhardt

Abstract

Educated on the lessons from the scholars who were responsible for the consolidation of the historical sciences in the University of Berlin, the Swiss historian Jacob Burckhardt (1818-1897) is commonly referred to as the author of the 1860 classic The Civilization of Renaissance in Italy. In this work, Burckhardt presented a historical synthesis of the period, translated in the memorable formula which deals with the discovery of man and the world. The present work aims at developing Burckhardts historical discovery through two of the fundamental expressions of the renaissance man: biography and autobiography. The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy is, therefore, seen as a historical construction which was permeated by the themes of biographical and autobiographical narratives, perceived as symbols of a grand historical constructo: modern individuality.
