Abstract

This research was based on meteorological data and forest fire occurrences in Telêmaco Borba county, Parana State, Brazil. The main objective was to improve the Formula de Monte Alegre (FMA) through the inclusion of the wind speed to the index. The forest fire variables used were the date of occurrence, detection and suppressing time and the burned area. The collected data referred to a period of 5 years, from June 1998 to May 2003. Two exponential models were selected. The selected models used the original fire danger classes but definition of new classes were necessary, to adjust to the new models. The selected models had been analyzed and submitted to a performance analysis, using skill score and the percentages of success. The equation to calculate the new wildfire danger index, incorporating the wind speed is:
