Abstract

Melia azedarach is a native species from Asia that has shown good soil and climate adaptation in Brazil. Its rapid growth associated with the quality of its wood make this species an excellent option for forest plantations, contributing to the generation of raw material for the forest-based industry and for new products. In this context, the objective of this research was to evaluate the bonding quality of Melia azedarach wood for the production of edge glued panels. The wood used comes from a forest plantation located in Corupá-SC. Samples were obtained from the trees collected to determine their physical- chemical properties and to evaluate the quality of  bonding. The bonding was performed with polyvinyl acetate and isocyanate polymer emulsion adhesives, in five weights (140, 160, 180, 200, 220 g/m2), under pressure of 7 kgf/cm2, and at ambient temperature for 1h. The evaluation of the glued joints followed the procedures of EN 13353 and EN 13354 standards. The statistical analysis adopted was a factorial design (2x5). Pinus taeda wood glued according to industrial parameters was used as a control. The results of the physical-chemical properties showed to be adequate for edge glued panels, the isocyanate polymer emulsion adhesive presented better performance when compared to the polyvinyl acetate in the wet test, and the grammage did not present a significant effect, and a grammage of 140 g/m2 can be recommended. It is concluded that Melia azedarach wood has potential for use as a raw material for the production of edge glued panels.
