Abstract

Fungal activities during litter decomposition and mineralization process are responsible for productivity, nutrient cycling and, sustainability of ecosystem. This study evaluated fungal diversity during needle decomposition of Pinus taeda under plantations with 6, 10, 14, 17 and 29 years old, located at Três Barras, SC, Brazil. Recent fallen needles were collected in April/2006, fragmented, submitted at 20 successive water washings, inserted in Petri dishes containing PDA medium with lactic acid and incubated at environmental conditions. Aureobasidium, Candida, Cladosporium, Exophiala, Fusarium, Penicillium, Pestalotia, Rhizoctonia, Rhizopus, Trichoderma and Tubercularia genera were identified. The most abundant genera were Pestalotia, Trichoderma and Penicillium. Fungal diversity was higher in older stands and can promote nutrient cycling and sustainability in longer rotation of pine plantations.
