Abstract

Market integration studies provide important information for governmentpolicies that have the objective of reaching and maintaining product marketequilibrium. This paper analyzed the chicken meat market integration in Brazilduring the period of 1998 to 2007. The main objective was to test the existence ofa central market from which price information is transmitted to other markets, verify if the regional markets are integrated with the central and measure the pricetransmition between the markets. It was concluded that São Paulo can be consideredas the central market and that the markets of Goiânia, Belo Horizonte, Descalvado,Ponta Grossa, Oeste Paranaense, Porto Alegre, and Litoral Catarinense are integratedforming the relevant chicken market in Brazil. Other regions considered:Belém, Fortaleza and Recife, do not belong to the same market. Price shocks aretransmitted from São Paulo to the integrated regions especially those less distant.
