Abstract

Aristotle’s discussion of substance at Metaphysics Z1 begins with anissue about the ontological status of some non-substantial items. This issue isusually understood as designed to establish substance as first being. In thispaper, I argue for an alternative interpretation of Aristotle’s move. The issueconcerning the ontological status of some non-substantial items does not aim atestablishing substance as first being, but to direct the investigation to the reasonwhy substance is taken as first being.
