NEOLIBERALISM AND DEMOCRACY IN SOUTH AMERICA: A STUDY ABOUT ARGENTINA, BRAZIL AND CHILE

This paper starts with a question about the relation between the democratic regimes from the 1980s in South America and the neoliberal economic and political model implemented in the region. In this sense, the proposal is to understand which was the role of the alignment between the neoliberal project and the consolidation of the democratic institutions in South America since the 1980s in relation to the development of the countries of the region. The discussion is based on three South American actors who have gone through authoritarian regimes and represent significant economies: Argentina, Brazil, and Chile. The analysis is based on a literature review on the subject and it is believed that this effort to understand this issue is interesting to clarify the direction of the region’s development.
