Exploratory study in which fifty (50) nurses were asked to give a written response to a question regarding professional attributes of cancer patients caregivers. The data analysed according to Strauss (1988) revealed attributes and behavíors expected by a nurse. The attributes included: being human, having scientific and technical knowedge and skills, seeing a person as a whoie, having an integrated self, being responsible and able to solve problems. The behaviors included: demonstrate feelings and understanding, inform and clarify, act with knowedge and safety, and being ethical. It appears that those attributes are the ones that the nurse expects to receive from a professional caregiver. Thus it would be desirable that she would possess them while caring for others.
