Abstract

Study of qualitative nature objectifying to reflect on the issue of autonomy with a group of eight nurses from

intensive care units of a teaching hospital. The data collected by means of a semi-structured interview were submitted to

Bardin’s content analysis. The analysis made it possible the identification of two categories: perceiving the complexity of

the autonomy meaning and identifying facilitators and hindrances to the construction of autonomy in the work process.

The results make it possible the perception that autonomy is still a value to be reached, it has multiple understanding and

should be daily conquered in hospital settings due to intrinsic nursing conditions as well as institutional conditions, often

experiencing situations of domination and subordination in relations established with other professionals, the hierarchic

structure of the institution and with technical health-caring models.
