Abstract

Systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) can, in many cases, be controlled with solely hygienic-dietetic measures (adequate food intake, practice of physical activities, abstinence from tobacco and alcohol, and weight control), although in other cases a concurrent use of drug therapy is required. The purpose of this study was to gain knowledge on the behavior of hypertensive patients regarding control measures. The subjects investigated were 18 hypertensive patients living in the coverage area of a Family Health Unit  located in the county of São Gabriel do Oeste, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, southwestern Brazil. A form containing open- and closed-ended questions was applied. Compliance with the measures of control was very low, even by those who had suffered complications of SAH. On the other hand, 83.3% of the informants were able to maintain their arterial pressure under control. Medication alone, however, is not enough to improve the health status of hypertensive patients.
