This essay assesses the significance of the work of South African anthropologist Jess Auerbach
considering the formation of Angolan society during the colonial period. From the perspective of
Angolan studies, I argue that Angola's independence did not bring about robust ruptures that altered the functioning of society, and therefore, it is not possible to disentangle the historicity of the contemporary context in which the analyzed middle class is situated. Despite this, the author's contributions to anthropology permeate the entire work: the didacticism, transparency, and reflections on fieldwork, writing, and teaching the discipline make the work stimulating and necessary.
