Introducción: La Retención Crítica del Conocimiento (RCC) es una subdisciplina de la Gestión del Conocimiento (GC) enfocada en mantener el conocimiento organizacional más relevante. Método: Este ensayo teórico utilizó una revisión bibliográfica no sistemática para desarrollar el tema de la RCC. Resultados: Se propuso el Modelo Teórico de Retención Crítica del Conocimiento Organizacional, así como cuatro tablas con los siguientes grupos de prácticas de GC indicadas para la retención: intercambio de conocimiento, documentación, prácticas basadas en la Gestión de Personas y prácticas basadas en tecnologías. Conclusión: Los profesionales de GC pueden utilizar el modelo como guía para implementar la RCC y la compilación de prácticas como un menú para seleccionar las más adecuadas para su contexto organizacional. La contribución teórica se presenta en forma del modelo propuesto y proposiciones que consolidan la literatura sobre retención del conocimiento, destacando las prácticas más referenciadas.
