Abstract

Introduction: Critical Knowledge Retention (CKR) is a sub discipline of Knowledge Management (KM) focused on maintaining the most relevant organizational knowledge. Method: This theoretical essay used a non-systematic literature review to develop the CKR theme. Results: The Theoretical Critical Knowledge Retention Framework was proposed as well as 4 tables with the following groups of KM practices indicated for retention: knowledge sharing, documentation, people-based and IT-based. Conclusion: KM practitioners may use the framework as a guide for implementing CKR and the compilation of practices as a menu to select those best suited to their organizational context. The theoretical contribution comprises the proposed model and propositions that consolidate the literature on knowledge retention, highlighting the most referenced practices.
