Introduction: This study delves into the technological development of global vitiviniculture, taking factors such as climate change, regional particularities, and their economic, social, and environmental ramifications into consideration. With that goal, it examines patents indexed in the PatentScope database shedding light on prevailing trends, key areas of innovation, and the principal stakeholders involved. Method: To this end, it analyzes 81,034 patents retrieved from the PatentScope database between 2002 and 2023, identifying filing dates, main countries, inventors, and applicants, as well as the themes of the patents. Results: The results indicate a growth in the number of filings, peaking in 2017. China, the Republic of Korea, and the United States are the main countries registering patents, with a predominance of Chinese inventors and applicants. The patents primarily refer to wine production, including both alcoholic and non-alcoholic wines, as well as the preparation of medicinal beverages. Conclusions: The study concludes that China holds a global leadership position in patenting within the viticulture sector and that innovations mainly occur in the wine production process.
