Abstract

Introduction: this article analyzes the experiences and communication needs of foreign students, as well as their perceptions of digital platforms in academic mobility, with the aim of supporting the Shared and Integrated Reception System for Foreign Students in Higher Education (SAPIEnS). Method: the Design-Based Research (DBR) methodology was adopted. In two stages of the study, data were collected through interviews and co-creation sessions with foreign students at the University of Aveiro. Results: the analysis allowed the development of recommendations to improve communication processes, serving as a basis for the development of the intermediate model of SAPIEnS. Conclusion: the implementation of appropriate practices can reduce bureaucratic and cultural barriers, while enhancing the positive aspects of the academic and social experience. The role of higher education institutions in offering support that promotes successful and enriching integration for foreign students is emphasized.
