Abstract

This survey is a part of a research that was undertaken with the aim of establishing the main causes of equine abortion in the Curitiba area. A serological survey for equine herpesvirus type 1 was carried out in 299 animals, until 1992. All equines studied were non-vaccinated against rhinopneumonitis, from both sexes and from different ages, beginning with one-year-old animals. From the total of animals studied, 17.7 per cent were positive for equine herpesvirus type 1 antibodies, which were studied by means of the serum neutralization test. These data were analyzed in regard to the age, sex, breed and the animals environment. It was observed that animals from one to four years old displayed increasing tendency for serum positivity, with the age advancement. The presence of neutralizing antibodies against equine herpesvirus type 1, in non-vaccinated animals, proves the existence of the above-mentioned virus in the studied population.
