The reconstruction of landform evolution in humid tropical regions, such as the Brazilian southeast, is particularly complex due to the multiple and frequent climatic changes that occurred during the Quaternary, especially in the Holocene. The Japuíba River basin (RJ), located on the foothills of the Serra da Bocaina, exhibits an abrupt transition between steep landforms, fluvial plains, and fluviomarine plains. This study aimed to reconstruct its complex Quaternary evolutionary history, driven by the frequent Holocene climatic changes. The methodology was based on detailed sedimentological profiles and radiocarbon (14C) dating of paleosols preserved in fluvial terraces. The results revealed a continental depositional succession, recording distinct phases of landscape evolution. An initial phase of intense fluvial incision was identified, associated with Neogene tectonic events and Quaternary sedimentation. Subsequently, the evolution became controlled by climatic oscillations. Periods of humid climate, with vegetation expansion and active pedogenesis (formation of organic A horizons), alternated with drier, more seasonal phases. The latter were marked by flash flood events, which promoted intense erosion on the slopes and significant sedimentation on the valley floor, burying paleosols in formation (one of them dated to 2,376 ± 71 years BP). The return to humid conditions concentrated water flows, causing a new episode of incision and the formation of the upper terrace (T1). New pulses of dry climatic regime triggered another cycle of aggradation, depositing thick sediments, upon which a soil dated to 442 ± 57 years BP developed. The return to humid conditions stabilized the landscape, resulting in a final incision event and the formation of the lower terrace (T2). The basin's landscape was, therefore, shaped by millennial to centennial climatic cycles, which alternate aggradation and pedogenesis with episodes of fluvial incision, demonstrating the intensity of evolutionary mechanisms in humid tropical areas, even over short time intervals within the Holocene.
