The Pessimismus-Frage was a heated philosophical discussion that took place in the second half of XIX century Germany, but that extended itself all over europe. With the late discovery of Schopenhauer’s philosophy, one of his most influential receptions was due to the presence of his pessimism, hence spawning new champions of modern pessimism and its enemies, as well. Though it is rarely put in question that the foundations of modern pessimism lay in Schopenhauer’s philosophy, an important thinker of the movement, Eduard von Hartmann, contested this assertion displacing the root of the emergence of modern pessimism from Schopenhauer to Kant, considering him as the later as the true father of pessimism <Vater des Pessimismus>. This article has two main goals: analyze which elements of Kantian philosophy Hartmann mobilizes to defend such an epithet for the author of the Critique of Practical Reason and consider to what extent his defense would be sustained in the face of Schopenhauerian philosophy.
