O campo das Ciências Térmicas desempenha um papel crítico no gerenciamento desses desafios. Em uma iniciativa recente, a Fundação Nacional de Ciências dos Estados Unidos da América3 convidou um grupo de pesquisadores de Ciências Térmicas a identificar desafios de ponta e oportunidades associadas em cinco áreas, uma das quais foi a de tecnologias de energias sustentáveis (as outras foram sistemas biológicos e biotecnologia, tecnologia de informação de segurança, e nanotecnologia). Apesar do relatório final não ter sido publicado antes deste editorial ser escrito, as veementes discussões apontavam para ações em pesquisa e educação por parte das instituições acadêmicas, governo e indústria. Alguns dos tópicos discutidos incluem células de combustível, agricultura marinha, biomassa, metrologia de sustentabilidade, seqüestro de carbono, e educação disseminada de indivíduos leigos na área de Ciências Térmicas.

The field of thermal sciences plays a critical role in managing these challenges. In a recent initiative, the National Science Foundation3 invited a number of thermal science researchers to identify frontier challenges and associated opportunities in five areas, one of which was sustainable energy technologies (the remaining were biological systems and biotechnology, security, information technology, and nanotechnology). While a final report was not yet published when this editorial was written, the passionate discussions pointed to action in research and education from academic institutions, government, and industry. Some of the topics discussed include fuel cells, seawater agriculture, biomass, sustainability metrics, carbon sequestration, and broad education of non-technical individuals on thermal sciences.
