Abstract

The social anxiety disorder or social phobia is characterized by an exorbitant fear during social or performance situations. Considered as a mental health problem, it has a chronic course and it is often disabling. This study aimed to provide an overview of academic productions related to the CAPES Theses and Dissertations from 1987 to 2009, using as keywords the terms: “Social Phobia” or "Social Anxiety Disorder". The results found 27 works. The focus of study could be grouped into the following thematic categories: Treatment, Comorbidity, Validation/Psychometric Properties; Diagnosis/Prevalence, Critical and Theoretical Review. We highlight the importance of further studies about this subject to provide a better understanding of its development and wider dissemination among health professionals.
