Abstract

Personal comment on the responses to “Towards a New Ethos of Science or a Reform of the Institution of Science? Merton Revisited and the Prospects of Institutionalizing the Research Values of Openness and Mutual Responsiveness” by René von Schomberg.

Author Biography

René von Schomberg, RWTH Aachen University, International Centre for Advanced Studies, Käte Hamburger Kolleg, Aachen

Former official of the European Commision. He is a Senior Research Fellow at RWTH Aachen University. He chairs also an European Commission supported Mutual Learning Excercise among 16 EU Member States on Science for Policy Ecosystem. Holds PhDs from the University of Twente, the Netherlands (in Science and Technology Studies) and the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, Germany (in Philosophy). He is a well-known opinion leader on Responsible Research and Innovation and Open Science. He is also a leading expert in the field of “Decision making under scientific uncertainty” and on the role of scientific advice in policy. Additionally, he is well known for his work on the Precautionary Principle and for work in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals. He runs a blog with open access resources: Https://renevonschomberg.wordpress.com
