Dear colleagues in the NOvation network,

We are pleased to announce an extended deadline for the submission of chapter proposals for the proposed edited volume Innovation and the Common Good: Public Policy and the Challenges of Collective Interest, currently under preparation for publication by Palgrave Macmillan.

The volume seeks to bring together scholars working at the intersection of Innovation Studies, Public Policy, Science and Technology Studies, Political Science, Political Economy, Sociology, and related fields. It will explore how the public purposes of innovation are defined, negotiated, institutionalised, and contested across different political, institutional, and policy contexts. Rather than focusing exclusively on innovation outcomes or performance, the book aims to advance debates on the governance of innovation, the role of public institutions, democratic participation, regulation, collective provision, and the relationship between innovation and the common good. Given NOvation’s critical engagement with dominant innovation narratives, we believe that contributions from members of the network would be especially valuable.

The volume is organised around six broad thematic sections:

1. Conceptual and Theoretical Foundations
2. Governance and Regulation Models for the Common Good
3. Innovation, Emerging Technologies, and the Common Good
4. Public Policies for Innovation, Collective Provision, and Universal Economic Security
5. Citizen Participation and Public Deliberation in the Innovation Process
6. Comparative Case Studies and Empirical Applications

These sections constitute an overarching intellectual framework rather than a restrictive classification. We also welcome proposals that engage critically and creatively with the volume’s central concerns or introduce new theoretical, methodological, epistemic, or empirical perspectives.

We invite extended abstracts of approximately 800–1,000 words, excluding references. Submissions should include:

• Proposed chapter title;
• The thematic section to which the proposal is primarily related;
• Research question and objectives;
• Main theoretical contribution and methodological approach;
• Expected contribution to the overall aims of the volume;
• Up to five keywords;
• Approximately 5–10 bibliographic references;
• Authors’ names, institutional affiliations, and e-mail addresses;
• A short biographical note of approximately 100 words for each author.

All proposals must be submitted in English.

The extended submission deadline is 7 September 2026.

Following the publisher’s assessment, selected contributors will be invited to prepare full chapters in accordance with the editorial guidelines and timetable for the volume.
