Abstract

The present article explores the characteristics of the North American
involvement in the transatlantic slave trade to Brazil, Cuba, and the
United States of America. The nature of this participation changed over
the nineteenth century as a result of tensions brought by the rise of new
sensibilities regarding the transatlantic slave trade. The article stresses
the role played by the state of Rhode Island on the slave trade and the impact of abolitionist legislation on the slave trading community of
the northern US.
