The Itajaí Port and the evolution of Santa Catarina’s economy

The objective of this article is to analyze the adaptations that the Port
of Itajaí went through in response to thee dynamics of the Catarinense economy
since 1880. The text is divided in eight topics that show the evolution of Port of
Itajaí at various moments of the Catarinense economy. Largely, the text can be
divided as follows: a) the Port of the Itajaí Valley that attended to the demands
from the territories in the Blumenau region; b) lumber port that adjusted to one of
the regional specializations of Santa Catarina; c) the crisis in lumber activities and
the transition to a diversified economy; d) general load port with focus on frozen loads; and e) new local management. The conclusion summarizes the impact of
the Port on the economy of Itajaí city.
