This paper analyzes the impact of economic complexity on exchange rate misalignment and volatility in BRICS countries from 1995 to 2021. The study examines the relevance of variables such as the Economic Complexity Index, the per capita GDP differential, interest rate, inflation, and international reserves in explaining exchange rate misalignment and volatility. To this end, ARDL and GMM models were estimated. The ARDL model results indicated that the Economic Complexity Index was significant and showed the expected sign in Brazil’s and South Africa’s exchange rate misalignment. In the GMM models, the variable demonstrated a significant negative impact in seven models, covering Brazil, China, Russia, South Africa, and India. Additionally, statistical significance and a negative sign were observed in Russia’s exchange rate volatility model. These findings suggest that economic complexity may influence exchange rate stability in the BRICS.
