This paper argues that, according to the author of The Ancient Medicine, medicine is not—and should not—be concerned with the human being in general terms, but with particular individual suffering persons. So according to The Ancient Medicine, medicine is a science of the particular and consists in empirical research. For this reason, The Ancient Medicine is perhaps the first deliberate acknowledgment of the scientific value of approximate knowledge and knowledge of the particular.
