Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

Author Guidelines

For all publications, authors (undergraduate students, graduates, specialists, master’s students, master’s degree holders, and doctoral candidates) must always include a PhD holder as a co-author of the text.

To ensure the integrity of the double-blind peer review process for submissions to the journal, it is essential to take precautions not to reveal the identity of authors and reviewers to each other during the process. This requires that authors, editors, and reviewers (who may submit documents to the system as part of the review process) take certain precautions with both the text and the document’s properties. The authors must remove their names from the text, replacing them with the term “Author” and the year in references and footnotes, instead of the authors’ names, article title, etc.

In Microsoft Office documents, the author’s identification must be removed from the document’s properties (in the menu File > Properties) by following these steps: File > Save As... > Tools (or Options on Mac) > Security Options... > Remove personal information from file on save > OK > Save.

ADHERENCE

The purpose of the publication, issued semiannually, is to present texts with theoretical discussions and/or unpublished research reports in Communication, Society, and Culture, offering graduate students, researchers in the field, and academics in general a space for debate and in-depth reflection. In this regard, the journal CONSUMER SCIENCES accepts contributions from authors who present works relevant to the journal’s focus and to the courses in Advertising and Institutional Communication at the Federal University of Paraná.

The content of the works represents the authors’ own views and not the official position of the Journal, the Editorial Board, or the Federal University of Paraná. The accuracy of the data published in the articles is the sole responsibility of their authors.

TYPES OF PUBLICATIONS

Texts must be original, unpublished in books or academic journals, and address studies related to the issue’s dossier (when applicable) through open call and/or intended for the continuous submission section, maintaining a focus on Communication, Advertising, and Consumption.

Scientific Articles, Dossiers, Reviews, Interviews, Visualities, Essays, Scientific Initiation Papers, and Innovative Productions in Communication and Extension may be produced by undergraduate or graduate students and must include:
a) an opinionated/reflexive character;
b) discussions and results derived from theoretical or empirical research;
c) a literature review — provided that it relates to the state of the art and constitutes an original contribution to the field of communication;
d) co-signature with their PhD supervisors.

STRUCTURE, FORMATTING

Papers must be submitted in the formatting model described herein; those that do not comply with it will not be accepted. Texts must not contain any information that could identify the authors (such as authorship, co-authorship, academic or professional credits, etc.). Articles and reviews will undergo double-blind peer review, with the author being responsible for providing all information requested during the registration and submission process through the journal’s system.

ARTICLES must be written in Times New Roman font, size 12, and contain a maximum of 50,000 characters (including spaces), encompassing titles, abstracts, references, tables, and footnotes. References must correspond strictly to those cited in the text. The use of uppercase letters must be restricted to acronyms and bibliographic references. Boldface may only be used in the title and section headings. Originals must be submitted in Word (.doc) or RTF format, up to 2 MB in size (if the file exceeds this limit, images should be attached as supplementary documents).

REVIEWS — After the review title (which must also be translated into Spanish and English and be different from the title of the reviewed work), the complete reference for the book, thesis, dissertation, film, or series must be provided. Reviews must not exceed 20,000 characters including spaces.

ARTICLES and REVIEWS should preferably be written in Portuguese. Works in Spanish, English, Italian, and, exceptionally, in French will also be accepted and published in their original versions. The top and left margins must be 3 cm, and the bottom and right margins 2 cm. The text body must be in Times New Roman, size 12, line spacing 1.5 cm, justified alignment, and paragraph indentation (first line) of 1.25 cm. When the article is written in another language, it must include the Portuguese versions of the title, abstract, and keywords.

Texts must conform to ABNT standards (NBR 6022), following this structure:
a) TITLE in uppercase and the rest in lowercase (except for proper nouns), in bold, followed by versions in Spanish and English, Times New Roman font, size 14, line spacing 1.5;
b) ABSTRACT of up to 250 words, in Times New Roman, size 12, single-spaced, in Portuguese, followed by the Spanish and English versions, each accompanied by 3 to 5 keywords, with only the first letter capitalized (e.g., Scientific communication;), separated by semicolons and also translated into English and Spanish;
c) SUBHEADINGS (unnumbered) must be preceded by a blank line;
d) FOOTNOTES must be in Times New Roman, size 9, justified, and limited to strictly necessary comments, not for bibliographic citations;
e) CITATIONS of up to three lines must be incorporated into the text, in quotation marks, followed by the reference (author’s last name, year, and page number) in parentheses, in accordance with NBR 10520 (ABNT). Example: (SILVA, 2003, p. 224–7). Quotations exceeding three lines must be indented 4 cm from the left margin, Times New Roman, size 10, single-spaced, without quotation marks, separated by blank lines before and after, and followed by the reference in the same format;
f) GRAPHS, TABLES, ILLUSTRATIONS, and FIGURES must appear within the body of the text, properly numbered and identified. Each image must include its caption and credit below, preceded by the word “Figure,” sequential numbering, and a colon. Example: Figure 3: Still Life, 1960, Giorgio Morandi (Museo Morandi, Bologna). The use of tables must follow the same formatting (NBR 6021). Images must include complete credit (author and source), and text authors are responsible for obtaining reproduction permissions, respecting national and international copyright laws (Law 9.610 and the Berne Convention of the World Intellectual Property Organization). Photographs, maps, and complex charts, diagrams, or flowcharts must be in print-quality formats (300 dpi and 20 cm width);
g) REFERENCES must appear only at the end of the paper, under the heading “References” (capitalized only in the first letter), in accordance with current ABNT standards (NBR 6023), single-spaced, and listed alphabetically.
