Introduction: The increased use of technologies and the conception of communication means have provided a greater range of formats for the dissemination of information. In this respect, the podcast presents itself as a communication tool on the rise for different spheres. This research aimed to understand how the podcast medium contributes to scientific dissemination and the characteristics of podcast production and dissemination linked to projects of Brazilian federal and state universities. Method: To carry out the work, we searched for podcast production initiatives in public universities in Brazil and, later, used a questionnaire as a research instrument to understand the use of the format in university academia. We used Bardin’s Content Analysis (2011) to categorize and analyze the collected material. Results: From the responses obtained, we noticed that the projects are predominantly produced in the scope of extension, followed by the teaching context. The main objective of the projects was cited as scientific dissemination, along with the interest in disseminating information, research, and knowledge from different areas such as engineering, psychology, health, law, and teaching. Additionally, the main barriers to operationalizing the projects were predominantly cited as lack of financial resources, funding, and structure. Conclusion: The podcast tool can be seen as an effective way to share information in a simplified and easily accessible manner. From the present research, we identified that most of the projects consider scientific dissemination as their main goal, seeking to provide greater accessibility in sharing scientific information with society.
