Abstract

Introduction: Among the organizational units that contribute to the success of projects, the project management office (PMO) stands out. However, there are few researches in the literature about Brazilian context and, furthermore, designed through survey. Thus, this research’s goal is to analyze the relationship between the PMO's level of responsibility and project success. The literature review describes the characteristics of the PMO and the success in projects. Method: This is a descriptive and quantitative research, and a transversal study. The sample has 100 professionals who work in PMOs, in large private Brazilian organizations. We used convenience sample. Data collection was carried out in the first quarter of 2021. Results: Only one hypothesis was confirmed, that is, PMOs with a higher level of responsibility had a higher frequency of success in the medium term. Conclusion: the research suggests that organizations that seek to develop and improve their project teams should have PMOs with a greater level of responsibility, that is, PMOs with a greater level of autonomy.
