Abstract

Introduction: this article investigates the perceptions and practices of faculty researchers at the Technology Center of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte regarding Open Science, focusing on open access and scientific publishing. Method: the study uses a case study methodology, combining scientometric analysis of academic production (2002–2024) and a questionnaire administered to a stratified sample of 153 faculty members. Results: the results reveal continued growth in scientific production and a trend toward greater adoption of open access journals (59.8% of publications), although institutional, cultural, and economic barriers persist, such as the charging of article processing charges the prestige of traditional journals, and the low use of university's institutional repository. Faculty perceptions indicate recognition of the benefits of Open Science for transparency, reproducibility, and the democratization of knowledge, but also highlight infrastructure limitations, legal uncertainty in the use of open licenses, and a lack of incentives in academic evaluation processes. Conclusions: It is concluded that the consolidation of Open Science requires robust institutional policies, training programs, financial support and the valorization of open practices in the evaluation of teaching production, to align the university with international guidelines and the Sustainable Development Goals.
