The State as a machine or as an organism? Kant and the opposition of the mechanical and organic paradigms in the context of the German natural law tradition

Abstract

This paper discusses the contrast between the metaphors of the machine and the organism in the context of 18th century German jusnaturalism and the transition from a mechanistic to an organic conception of the state. Based on the conceptual assimilation of the organism to the mechanical, the paradigm of the political body as a machine, which is assembled and driven by a wise and skillful ruler, is exemplified by the Prussian state of Frederick II. The shift to the paradigm of the political body as an organism, conceived by Kant in the light of the French Revolution, reflects a new understanding of the relationship between the parts and the whole, in which the state is no longer seen as a mechanical entity controlled by an external will. As an autonomous organism, in which the parts and the whole influence each other, this organic conception of state offers a new understanding of the political.

Professor Adjunto do Departamento de Filosofia da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC). Foi pesquisador de Pós-Doutorado pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) (2016-2019) e pela Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) (2017-2018). É Doutor em Filosofia pela Universidade de São Paulo (USP) e pela Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (JGU) (2015). Possui Mestrado em Filosofia pela USP (2011) e Graduação em Filosofia pela mesma instituição (2009). É coordenador do NEFIPO (Núcleo de Ética e Filosofia Política) e editor chefe da Ethic@ - Revista Internacional de Filosofia da Moral (ambos da UFSC), integrante do Grupo de Filosofia Alemã e da comissão editorial dos Cadernos de Filosofia Alemã: Crítica e Modernidade (ambos da USP), além de ter sido pesquisador visitante do Núcleo Direito e Democracia do CEBRAP. É tradutor de obras de filosofia alemã clássica e de livros e textos de literatura especializada sobre filosofia. Desenvolve pesquisa nas áreas de História da filosofia moderna e Ética e filosofia política, com ênfase em Kant, no Esclarecimento alemão e suas ressonâncias contemporâneas. É coordenador do GT Kant, membro da diretoria da Sociedade Kant Brasileira (SKB) e coordenador, com Bruno Cunha e Robinson dos Santos, do projeto de tradução das obras de Kant na Coleção Pensamento Humano, da Editora Vozes
