Empenho político e cultural em Paulo Emílio Salles Gomes: 1935-1945

Resumo

Este artigo propõe-se a fornecer elementos para estudar o papel intelectual desempenhado por Paulo Emílio Salles Gomes nos anos trinta e quarenta, especialmente na revista Clima. Por meio de um relato biográfico, analisamos o processo de formação de um intelectual crítico em meio às lutas políticas e sociais que caracterizaram o período, tanto no Brasil quanto em nível mundial. O relato esclarece o esforço de Paulo Emílio em constituir e difundir a noção de um socialismo independente no Brasil, contrapondo-se tanto ao fascismo e à ditadura de Getúlio Vargas quanto ao stalinismo e ao trotskismo, favorável à emancipação do homem e à revolução social, e mantendo como valores básicos a liberdade individual e a civilização ocidental.

Abstract

The goal of this article is to supply some elements for the study of the Paulo Emilio Salles Gomes' intellectual role during the thirties and forties, particularly within the magazine, "Clima". Through biographic account, I analyze the process of formation of a critical intellectual in the midst of the social and political struggles that characterized the period, both in Brazil and at a worldwide level. My account clarifies the efforts that Paulo Emilio made in constituting and disseminating the notion of an independent socialism n Brazil, contrasting it both to the fascism and dictatorship of Getulio Vargas and to Stalinism and Trotskyism while favoring human emancipation and social revolution and sustaining individual freedoms and western civilization as core values.

Résumé

Cet article a pour visée de fournir des éléments pour une étude du rôle intellectuel joué par Paulo Emílio Salles Gomes dans les années trente et quarante, surtout dans la revue Clima. Au travers d'un récit biographique on analysera le processus de formation d'un intellectuel critique au milieu des luttes politiques et sociales qui ont caractérisé la période aussi bien au Brésil que par le monde. Le récit clarifie l'effort de Paulo Emílio de constituer et diffuser la notion d'un socialisme indépendant au Brésil, s'opposant aussi bien au fascisme et à la dictature de Getúlio Vargas qu'au stalinisme et au trotskisme. Par ailleurs, il était non seulement favorable à l'épanouissement de l'homme et à la révolution sociale, mais encore il défendait des valeurs primordiales comme la liberté individuelle et la civilisation occidentale.
