Abstract

Considering the increase of applied research held in other countries and the absence of Brazilian publications in Behavior Analysis relating antecedent events and childhood behavioral problems, this article aims to describe: (1) the antecedent processes in conceptual terms, according to B. F. Skinner and J. Michael and (2) the role that antecedent events can have in the analysis of behavioral problems. Three applied researches that have their focus of investigation on the relationship between the antecedent variables “parental attention” and “difficulty of the task” and the behavior of noncompliance are presented. The results of these researches demonstrate the manipulation of antecedents events as an efficient alternative that can contribute to reduce the use of aversive consequences in the control of noncompliance in childhood.

Keywords: functional analysis; antecedent events; childhood behavioral problems.
