A Luteria Acadêmica em Prática
A formação na UFPR e a construção de contrabaixos elétricos
Abstract
The article "Academic Lutherie in Practice: Training at UFPR and the Construction of Electric Basses", by Juarez Bergmann Filho and Fernando Schubert, analyzes the academic training in lutherie at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), highlighting the transition from the traditional master-apprentice teaching model to a collective approach within the university context. The Higher Education Program in Lutherie, the only one of its kind in Brazil, is structured over three years, combining intensive practice, theoretical foundations, and technical experimentation, enabling students to progressively develop skills from the construction of acoustic guitars to authorial projects, specializing in acoustic, bowed, or electrified instruments. To illustrate this training process, the article presents a case study of a student who built a trilogy of electric basses, demonstrating the technical progression enabled by the course, evolving from an initial construction with a through-neck design, to a fretless model with a bolt-on neck, and finally, an original six-string project exploring ergonomic and aesthetic experimentation. The study also discusses the challenges of collective lutherie education, the course’s infrastructure, and its connection with the professional market, concluding that academic training not only qualifies luthiers but also fosters innovation, research on new materials and digital technologies, as well as the preservation of Brazilian organological heritage.
