INDIVIDUALISMO ROMÂNTICO E MODERNIDADE DEMOCRÁTICA: UMA CONFIGURAÇÃO MÚTUA

Resumo

Este artigo propõe como objeto de análise a formação de uma concepção moderna de democracia no século XIX e as relações que essa concepção guarda com a afirmação de um novo paradigma de individualismo que chamo de individualismo romântico. Minha tese é de que esses dois eventos são mutuamente configuradores, ou seja, de que a conformação de novas instituições e de uma teoria moderna da democracia guardam íntimas relações com os pressupostos do novo paradigma de individualismo. O texto começa delimitando um terreno em que podemos lidar com a idéia de uma teoria homogênea da democracia ou de romantismo, investigando, em seguida, as condições em que é possível falar de individualismo propriamente romântico e da forma como essa noção é incorporada nos discursos dos democratas liberais como Stuart Mill, Tocqueville e Schumpeter.

ROMANTIC INDIVIDUALISM AND DEMOCRATIC MODERNITY: A MUTUAL CONFIGURATION

Abstract

This article analyzes the formation of modern conception of democracy in the 19th century and the relationship that this conception has to the emergence of a new paradigm of individualism that I call romantic individualism. My thesis is that these are two mutually shaping events, in other words, that the configuration of new institutions and a modern theory of democracy are intimately related to a new paradigm of individualism. The text begins by establishing the grounds within which we can work with the idea of a homogeneous theory of democracy or of romanticism, and then going on to research the conditions in which it becomes possible to speak of a specifically romantic individualism and of the way in which this notion is incorporated into the discourse of liberal democrats such as Stuart Mill, Tocqueville and Schumpeter.

Cet article propose comme objet danalyse la formation dune conception moderne de démocracie au XIXième siècle et les relations que cette conception maintient à légard de laffirmation dun nouveau paradigme dinvidualisme que jappelle individualisme romantique. Ma thèse est que ces deux événements sont tous deux configurateurs, cest-à-dire que la conformation de nouvelles institutions et dune théorie moderne de la démocracie entretiennent des relations intimes avec les pressuposés du nouveau paradigme dindividualisme. Le texte dabord délimite le terrain où lon peut envisager une théorie homogène de la démocracie ou de romantisme; ensuite il étudie les conditions où il est possible de parler dindividualisme romantique et de la forme par laquelle la notion est intégrée aux discours des démocrates libéraux comme Stuart Mill, Tocqueville et Schumpeter.
