Families in rural areas are primarily farmers and own domestic animals, which produce organic waste. This waste is directly used as fertilizer on their land. When this organic matter decomposes, it produces bad odours, leading to environmental pollution. Organic matter can be treated through different biochemical processes for stabilisation; one of them is anaerobic treatment, through which the energy contained in the organic matter is recovered in the form of biogas with a high methane content. This biogas can be utilized for the production of electrical and thermal energy. The electrical energy can be used in electric stoves, leading to a reduction in liquefied gas consumption, while the thermal energy can be used in heating systems and hot water for households. This improves living conditions, as rural areas are located in the high parts of the Andes mountains, where the average annual temperature varies between 7-15°C at night. This energy is free for the community, and the treatment plant can be entirely managed by the community due to its simple operation
