Abstract

The species richness of actiniarians was studied in an area (Tubarão - Praia Mole Harbour at Vitória, Espírito Santo state, southeastern Brazil) directly impacted by wastes from an iron ore pelletizing plant. To date, thirteen species of sea anemones have been identified from the region. Five others are still being studied. Distributions of two species have been extended along the Brazilian coast, with the known range of Anthopleura varioarmata increased to the north and that of A. krebsi to the south. Questions concerning the colour of a few species are briefly discussed.
