Abstract

This paper intends to identify the factors responsible for the variations in the rural labor income inequalities in the counties of Rio Grande do Sul (RS) from 1996 to 2005. To understand what motivated these variations is an important step to the comprehension of the causes of income inequality. There are many studies analyzing income inequality, but fewer which study the determinants of its variation and still less which analyze variations in income inequality in the rural sector. The results show that occurred changes in the rural labor income inequality in the counties of RS, measured in terms of the Gini index, and that the main factors responsible for them were modifications in the agricultural gross product, in the scholarship and in the reallocation of the workers among different income classes. The reductions in the income inequality are not the result of an advanced stage of development, as would be expected according to Kuznets hypothesis, but a consequence of a generalized impoverishment of the agricultural workers in the counties of RS
